MICROBIOLOGY

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:

• The subject and department of Microbiology at undergraduate level were introduced in Pingle. Govt. College for Women, Warangal during the academic year 1998 - 1999. It is a restructured course under the self-financed scheme.
• The department was incepted on the recommendations of Commissioner of Collegiate Education, A.P., Hyderabad, with a motto to introduce modem science among the rural students.
• The intake capacity of students is 30 per class. A three member teaching faculty was handling the classes. Initially two staff members were drafted from the department of Botany and Zoology. Later on one post was sanctioned by the conversion of chemistry post.
•  A two member non-teaching staff on contract basis was appointed to attend the laboratory work.
• In 2018-19 Academic year, a new course with Botany combination (MBC E/M) was introduced under CBCS pattern with an intake of 30 Students.
• Required facilities were procured in and a separate block was established. It was inaugurated on 11-12-2000 by Prof. S.M. Reddy, the then Head of the department of Microbiology, Kakatiya University, Warangal. All these activities have been successfully shouldered by Dr. T. Rajyalakshmi, the then Incharge of Microbiology Department. M.V.R. Krishna Rao. Lecturer in Botany, was the key person behind the development of the department.
• Both attended training classes in Microbiology which was organized by Commissioner of Collegiate Education, A.P., Hyderabad, conducted by Osmania University, Hyderabad. After the superannuation of Dr. T.H. Rajyalakshmi, Sri. M.V.R. Krishna Rao has taken over the charge of the department. Smt. G. Indira and Sri. K. Divakarachary who joined in the due course, also afforded to strengthen the department. Later the vacant post was arrived due to the transfer of Sri. K. Divakarachary and was filled by            Dr. P. Venkateshwarlu and after the superannuation of M.V.R. Krishna Rao, the post was filled by Dr. M. Madusudan Rao. After the superannuation of Dr. M. Madusudan Rao, the post was filled by Dr .G.Renuka. 
• Dr. G. Renuka joined the Department in 2012 and took it to greater heights.
• After the NAAC Accreditation the department introduced English medium in U.G level in the academic year 2005 with a total of 30 students as sanctioned strength. Then in the academic year 2006 it started the P.G Course in Microbiology with 24 students as sanctioned strength, as per the orders issued by the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, A.P., Hyderabad. The PG course was affiliated to Kakatiya University, Warangal and the students are admitted on the basis of merit in CPGET by the counseling process conducted by University authorities.
• Now at present the department has one well equipped laboratories and one lecture hall with all modern teaching aids like OHP and LCD. The PG courses are taught by the regular staff and also by guest faculty who are selected on the basis of their performance in demonstration classes.
• The UG & PG students are encouraged to take up project work in research laboratories. During 2008-2009, 3 students did their project in Ventura labs, Hyderabad, 3 students in Vijaya diagnostics centre, Warangal under the supervision of Dr, Kondal Rao and 1 student in Agriculture research centre, Warangal. Then in 2010 – 2011 about 20 students worked on projects at Global Biotechnologies Ltd. Hyderabad. In 2015 2 of our students were recruited as QC-Analyst at Reddy’s Laboratories, Hyderabad. Our Students are also placed as Soil & Water analyst at Natur Labs, Hyderabad. By inculcating orientation towards research and by building up the research abilities, these students are encouraged to take up Ph.D programmes.
