      Brief History

      • Established in the year 1967, the Department of Botany is oldest among the science departments in the college.
      • Initially the Department offered Botany with Zoology and Chemistry combination (BZC) in both English and Telugu medium. Classical Botany was taught in the Curriculum.
      • With the Technological advancements in the field, the Department has equipped itself technically from time to time to cater the needs of students in learning latest advancements.
      • Accordingly, as on date as a part of the curriculum prescribed, applied aspects of Botany are also being taught and also many initiatives are being taken up by the Department in educating the students in the aspect.
      • Also, Botany is being taught in combination with various applied

      Objectives:

      • To promote importance of Botany subject and to make students able and self reliant after completion of the Degree.
      • To learn about botanical importance in Life
      • To learn about importance of Botany like Medicinal Botany, Microbial, Biotechnological, Biological aspects
      • To educate the students on environmental aspects of Botany
      • To motivate the students to know the various aspects of Botany
      • To inculcate the research orientation skills related to Botany
      • To inculcate, enlighten the students in inter relation of botany with Agriculture, horticulture, biotechnology, Industry etc..

      Brief report on visit to Vegetable Research station: The field trip was aimed to enlighten students on the techniques of Vegetable growing, propagation by vegetative methods and also to make them aware of different methods of biological control of plant diseases. The students became well aware of various techniques involved in growing of vegetables and on methods of identifying the best quality vegetables and also about various biological control methods adopted to control pests and various diseases.

Brief report on Redesigning of the curriculum workshop:  The senior teaching staff from different colleges have attended the workshop and exchanged their ideas.   Many new ideas of encouraging students academically have been floated in the workshop.  Ideas relating to practicals, project works and field trips were appreciated. 
      2. Brief report on Advanced Molecular techniques workshop:  All the students were actively involved in the workshop and learnt the techniques with enthusiasm.  They could get a clear insight into various instruments and few protocols of molecular biology.  The participants were given away certificates by the Principal, Dr.C. Manjulatha madam.  By the end of the day the workshop was a grand success.

      1. Brief report on Vanamahotsavam:Many social forestry trees were planted in the premises and cleaning of the entrance garden and other areas was taken up and completed successfully by the students.
      2. Brief report on Mendel’s birthday celebrations:The students became aware of Mendel’s contributions and took keen interest to know the facts.  The participants of the quiz were very active and there was a stiff competition amongst the students.  By the end of the programme, students expressed their desire to participate in many such programmes.
      3. Brief report on Dhulapally forest visit: The students were excited to witness rare plants in the academy.   They also became aware of few conservation strategies adopted by the forest department to conserve few endangered species.  They also could collect good number of specimens for preparation of the herbarium.  Overall the field trip has left a very good learning experience for both the staff and the students.
      4. Brief report on Horticulture expo visit:The staff and students could get first hand information about various self employment opportunities, different methods of farming and also could see different kinds of Bonsai, rare medicinal plants and other vegetable plants.  The field trip was very much fruitful.

      Brief report on “Gardening techniques workshop”:  The Department of Botany in collaboration with Agri Horticulture Society, Public gardens, Hyderabad has organised a three-day training programme on “Gardening techniques” between 13th to 15th February, 2017.  The students were given training in various gardening skills like – vermicompost preparation, nursery bed preparation, potting, repotting, propagation of plants by layering, grafting and also on various techniques to prevent the incidence of diseases.  Around 30-35 students have enrolled in the programme and have participated enthusiastically.  Certificates were given away after the completion of the programme.
