GOVERNMENT CITY COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS), HYDERABAD

 

 

The Department of Mathematics in Government City College,  Nayapul, Hyderabad established in the year 1965 with different combination at UG level keeping in view the need for strengthening its Physical Sciences Wing and growing competition in the IT and Science fields. Dr. L. Nagarajan, Reader of the Department has been the In-charge of the Department for more than two years and has also been the recipient of prestigious AP State Best Teacher Award-2006. Eminent teachers like Sri. K. Rama Mohan, previously one of the NAAC Peer Team Members and Mr.Baig,Visiting Professor at one of the Schools of Mathematics in USA, made a remarkable and tremendous contribution in bringing up the Department of Mathematics

 

With the passage of time, a Post Graduate Course in Mathematics was introduced on Semester Model, in the year 2003-04. In the year 2015, the college introduced Department of Statistics with different combinations at UG level. Till today, admission into PG as well as UG courses is in great demand.

 

Objectives:

 

• To inculcate the habit of independent thinking and problem solving.

 

• To prepare the students  reach out look for various fields

 

• Identify and focus the students to the current issues and challenges in the field of mathematics.

 

• To train the students in such a way that the knowledge acquired can be practically implemented for solving various problems encountered in the personal as-well-as professional life.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Present Faculty:

 

There are  five sanctioned posts in the Department of Mathematics  presently 4 Regular Assistant Professors &1 Guest Lecturer  are  working in the Department. There is one sanctioned post in the Department of Statistics presently 1 Regular Associate Professor & 1 Guest Lecturer is working in the Department. Three Guest lecturers are working in  M.Sc. Mathematics.

I-YEARSEMESTER-IPAPER-I

 

Course Title:Differential and Integral calculus

 

 

 

On Completion of this course the students will be able to:

 

• Defineordinary and partial differential equations.
• Understand   Euler’s theorem for homogeneous functions.
• Find radius of curvature and centre of curvature.
• Find maxima and minima of function of two variables.
• Evaluate the volume of solids using cross sections.
• Evaluate the area of surfaces of revolution
• Calculate  the length of an arc of a curve when whose equations are given in parametric and polar form.

 

 

 

 

I-YEARSEMESTER-IIPAPERII

 

Course Title:Differential Equations

 

On successful completion of the course, Students will be able to:

• After learning the course the students will be equipped with the various tools to solve few types of differential equations that arise in several branches of science.
• Define differential equation,order and degree of the differential equation.
• Solve first order differential equation, utilizing standard techniques of a seperable ,exact and linear homogeneous equations

Find complete solution of non homogeneous differential equations as linear combination of complementary function and particular solution.

Students will have a working  knowledge of basic  application problems described by second order linear differential equations with constant coefficient.

 Identifydifferent types of differential equations  and solve them.

Solve the partial differential equation using lagrange’smethod

 

II-YEARSEMESTER-IIIPAPER-III

 

Course Title: Real Analysis

 

After completing the course students are expected to be able to:

 

  Describe the basic difference between the rational and realnumbers.

  Give the definition of concepts related to metric spaces such ascontinuity, compactness, convergent etc..

  Evaluate the limits of wide class of real sequences.

Determine whether or not real series are convergent by various methods

  Understand and perform simple proofs.

Students will be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of key topics in classical real analysis

 

II-YEARSEMESTER-IVPAPER-IV

 

 

Course Title: Abstract Algebra

 

 

 

After completing the course students are expected to be able to:

  Learn about the fundamentals concept of Groups, Sub groups,normal

subgroups, isomorphism theorems, Cyclic and permutation groups

  To combine Polynomial by Addition or Subtraction

  Learn about Rings,properties of Rings,Ring homomorphism and integral     domain,Fields,ideals

 

 

III-YEARSEMESTER-VPAPER-V

 

 

COURSE TITLE:LINEAR ALGEBRA

 

After completing the course students are expected to be able to:

 

 

  Define vector space andsubspace

  Understand the concept of bases and dimension of the vectorspace

  Understand algebraic and geometric representations ofvectors

  Describes coordinates of a vector relative to a given basis

  Discuss spanning sets  for vectors

  Use characteristic polynomial to compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors

Explain the relationship between the row space and column space of a matrix

  Recognize and use basic properties of subspaces and vectorspace

 

 

SEMESTER:VPAPER:VII

 

COURSE TITLE:VECTOR CALCULUS

 

After completing the course students are expected to be able to:

 

 

  Compute limits or derivatives of functions of two and three variables

  Analyze vector functions to find limits,derivatives and integrals

  Determine gradient vector fields and find potential function

Apply fundamental theorem of line integrals,greens, anddivergence theorem to evaluate integrals

Compute partial derivatives,derivatives of vector valued function and gradient functions

  Calculate directional derivatives and gradient

 

SEMESTER:VIPAPER:VI

 

COURSE TITLE:NUMERICAl ANALYSIS

After completing the course students are expected to be able to:

 

 

  The theoretical and practical aspects of the use of numericalanalysis.

Proficient in implementing numerical methods for a varietyof multidisciplinary applications.

To establish the limitations, advantages,and disadvantages of numerical analysis.

To derive numerical methods for various mathematical operations and tasks, such As interpolation, differentiation,integration, the solution of linear and non linear equations, and the solution of differentialequations.

 

 

SEMESTER:VIPAPER:VIII

 

COURSE TITLE:Complex Analysis

After completing the course students will

• Understand difference between differentiability and analytic functions.
• realize calculus of radius is one of the power tools in solvingsome problems, like improper and definite integrals, effortlessly.
• Use antiderivatives or Cauchy’s integral theorem or formula to compute line integrals.
•  Determine whether given functions have antiderivatives, logarithms, and nth roots.
•  Find Laurent series about isolated singularities, and determine residues.
•  Use the residue theorem to compute several kinds of real integrals.
