College Annual Report 2019-2020

Government Degree College for Women, Begumpet, Hyderabad was established in 1971. It is located centrally at Begumpet and caters to the needs of the girl students of twin cities and also the nearby districts. The college provides education to deserving candidates in a secular atmosphere and is committed to serve the economically weak, socially underprivileged and needy students. During the last four decades the college has grown from strength to strength and presently helps about 4500 students to access higher education. Our college is the first Government College in the Telangana State to volunteer for the 3rd cycle of Accreditation by NAAC.  We were awarded B+ grade.  Recognizing the potential of the college, the University Grants Commission had conferred fresh autonomous status to the college in the academic year 2012-13 and the college is getting ready for second cycle of Autonomy Inspection in 2019-20.  

This year, the college has registered student strength of 2953 with 33 U.G. courses and 06 P.G. courses. The infrastructure in the college is conducive to the multifaceted courses that we offer.  Our Library comprises 22,000books, a Reading Room with e-corner, several Journals related to various subjects, Magazines and Newspapers. In the light of such academic and infrastructural facilities, we reiterate our commitment to our objective ‘Learning is the Best Ornament’, as we firmly believe that women empowerment alone can take the society to greater heights. 

The Telangana Skill Knowledge Centre (TSKC) in the college is a prestigious initiative of the State Government and our college has been identified as the nodal centre for TSKC activities.  At the TSKC, students are given training in Computer Skills, Aptitude and Communication Skills to instill confidence in the students to face the selection process for various companies. The TSKC interacts with various industries to conduct placement drives on campus and recruit students. Due to Covid- 19  On-campus hiring was uncertain. Nevertheless, the TSKC Cell planned OFF-CAMPUS RECRUITMENT DRIVE.  Schneider Electric conducted a job drive off campus and 91 students were selected during the drive. 

• The pass percentage of the college increased to 95% in the Academic Year 2019-2020.

• The college is open to new ideas and ready to embrace new adoptions for quality education. Moving on the similar lines, as per the CCE instruction, the College introduced MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) under the CBCS system offering  33 new courses  with different combinations  during the academic year 2019 - 2020.

• TSKC Curriculum on Employability Skills and Gender Sensitization Course was added to the 1st year Degree Course in semester I & II respectively and was revised for 2 credits each from 2019-2020.

• In addition to the languages and core subjects offered, the college has introduced 16 GE and SEC Electives in the academic year 2019-2020.  The syllabus and the evaluation pattern for these 16 electives were designed by the respective Departments.  

Under the CBCS pattern 100 hours of training spread over three years either in NCC / NSS / Sports / Martial Arts has been made mandatory for all students for 2 credits each from 2019-2020.

I am happy to inform you that the college in its endeavor to strengthen the teaching learning process has taken up several initiatives comprising extension lectures, teachers and students participation, achievements  for the academic and the student’s response to these courses has been overwhelming.  The college notably caters to the extracurricular activities including NCC, NSS and sports and achieved accolades during this Academic Year. The activities taken up by each department is commendable and innumerable covering diverse issues related to socio-economic and health areas of the society . To name a few Awareness campaigns on Corona, Plastic free society, Swachh Bharat - Swasth Bharat deserve a big round of applause. 

  The staff and students of the college have been actively participating in the curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

Although the Covid - 19 brought the whole world to a standstill, I take the privilege to inform you that the college, in its commitment to cater continuous learning, has conducted Webinars for lecturers and students.

  2. International day of mother tongue:  Department of Telugu has celebrated Antarjatiya Matrubhasha Dinotsavam on 21-02-2019.
  3. Animal day was celebrated on 04-10-2019 by the department of Zoology and a Quiz was conducted on the occasion.
  4. On 22 December 2019, the Mathematics department celebrated Maths Day on the birth anniversary of ‘Srinivasa Ramanujan’.
  5. International Women's day was celebrated in the college on March 8. 2020.
  6. VOTERS DAY: Department of Political Science has made a rally to celebrate Voters Day which aimed to create awareness among the public and students. Department also conducted Essay writing and Quiz competitions among the students in the college.
  7. Harithaharam  and tree plantation was done on 25-08-19
  8. National  Sports Day was celebrated on 29-08-19
  9. NCC Day was celebrated Nov 12, 2019.

  I am extremely happy to share that the college has responded to the sudden outbreak of Covid-19 by adopting new technology and innovative ideas ensuring no break in imparting education.

Extension Lectures 

  • Dr.D. Padmaja Assistant Professor of Sanskrit has given Extension lecture on the topic volunteerism organized by Nehru Yuvakendra ; Telangana at GDC Begumpet on 02-03-2019. 
  • On 29-9-2019 Department of  Zoology and Biotechnology conducted  Extension lecture by Mr.K.Mahesh, Senior Scientist from Biological E Limited, Topic was Vaccine development and molecular biology and immunology techniques used.
  • A lecture was delivered by Prof.E.Prem Kumar Reddy, which included Contributions and research activities of Prof.Nayudamma and cancer therapeutics.
  •  The department of Zoology and Biotechnology has carried out a field trip to Indian Institute of chemical technology, Tarnaka, Hyderabad on 28th September 2019. 
  • The department of Zoology and Biotechnology has carried out a field trip to Institute of Genetics and Hospital for genetic Diseases, Begumpet, Hyderabad on 12th September 2019. Students visited catalysis lab, natural products lab, biotechnology lab, discovery lab and pheromones lab.
  • Dr.P.Siva Reddy Endowment Lecture by Dr.A.Saibaba Goud, the lecture included commemoration of Dr.P.Siva Reddy, his research activities.
  • Department of Political  Science has conducted Extension Lectures on October 5th,2019 and March 12 th,2020 by Dr.Sri Pathi Naidu and Dr.G.Ram Reddy.
  • Department of History conducted an Extension lecture on March 6, 2019. The resource person was Dr.Subash, Asst.Prof-Maulana Azad National Urdu University on the topic “Megalithic culture of Telangana”.
  • Department of Journalism has conducted an extension lecture by Dr. Kennedy, Assistant Professor in Mass Communication from Hyderabad Central University on 4 March 2020.
  • An extension lecture for B.Sc (MPC & MPCs) II Year students was conducted on the topic ‘Diffraction’. The resource person was Dr.K.Chandra Shekar Rao, Asso. Professor, Principal Nagarjuna Degree college, Nalgonda M .G University on  4/04/2019
  • Journalism Students visited Hyderabad Literary Festival organized by HPS from 25- 27 January 2019.
  • Hindi Diwas Samaroh was celebrated on 22nd September 2019.

Dr.Avinash Jaiswal, HOD, Nizam College Hyderabad was the chief guest on the occasion.

  • Vishwa Hindi Diwas was celebrated on 10th of Jan 2019, in the presence of the principal of the college, students participated in the programme by giving speeches, reading their poetry, they also told about the importance of Hindi Language around the world.
  • An extension lecture was conducted by the Hindi department on 27-2-2019, Dr. Ghanshyam, Director of Hindi Academy Telangana Hyd, Principal and HOD Department of Hindi Government Degree college for women, Nalgonda has delivered an extension lecture on the topic “Hindi mein rozgar yojana”
  • An extension lecture was organized by the department of  English and the guest was By Dr.Meeta Kulkarni held on 15 march’ 2019 on the Topic: Importance of Soft skills in Job market.


National Science Day: National Science Day was  celebrated to create awareness  and importance of science used in daily life of the people on Feb 28, 2020.  To display all the activities, efforts and achievements in the field of science for human welfare. To implement new technologies for the development of the Science. Fostering scientific temper in the next generation.

Commerce Day:Department of Commerce organized commerce exhibition for B Com 1st students on Feb 5 and 2019. The program was inaugurated by Osmania University Vice Chancellor Prof.Ramchandram, Principal Dr.G.Yadagiri ,GDC(W) Begumpet .Students of  B.Com first years actively took part in the preparation and presentation of various models relating to commerce, some of the models were based on commerce Trade, Aids-to-trade, Types of Industries, Types of Insurance, Online Shopping, Online Marketing, Online Payments, GST Various, to mention a few.

Social Sciences and Arts Day:To create awareness among the students about the social sciences and its significance in the society, Social Sciences and Arts Day was celebrated on March 4, 2020. Students participated in Social Rangotsav –  a rangoli competition was held  on social issues like women empowerment and  Social institutions. Students enthusiastically took part in the Food festival s and exhibited their talents by taking part in Mehndi competition.


The college has entered into 11 MOUs with industries related to Life sciences, Physical sciences, Commerce and languages. To list a few

  1. The Sanskrit department entered into an MOU with Samskritha Bharathi. Telangana for Spoken Sanskrit & Certificate Course on Aug 2 2019.
  2. An MOU was signed with IIT Bombay & CCETS, Govt. of Telangana on Spoken Tutorial (MOOCS)  on Feb 19, 2019
  3. An MOU was signed with M/s AB International School for Financial Studies Pvt. Ltd  for Training in Accountancy, CBT in Accounting & TALLY, MIS

The activities taken up by each department is commendable.  The support departments have taken up   innumerable initiatives covering diverse issues related to socio-economic and health areas of the society.



NSS Day was celebrated  on 24th September 2019.  Smt. Satyavathi Rathod was Honorable Minister for Tribal, Women & Child Welfare, Govt. of Telangana was the  Chief Guest, and Sri. Madavaram Krishna Rao, MLA,  Kukatpally graced the occasion as  Guest of Honour.,


International yoga day was celebrated on June 21st 2019 by NSS unit – IV in college premises.  NSS Co-Ordinator from OU   Dr.Ramulu was the Chief Guest. Yoga trainer, Retired Professor Venkata Rajaiah of Osmania University graced the occasion and made the volunteers practice yoga.


To name a few Awareness campaigns on Corona, Plastic free society, Swachh Bharat - Swasth Bharat deserve a big round of applause. 


The college was the host for the Yuvataranagam Sports Competitions and the Physical Education department conducted State and Cluster level competitions in Ko-Kho-, Kabbadi, Volley ball and various other athletics in the campus.



Eco Club conducts events on every last Saturday of  a month. Eco Club in association with Botany department organized “Swachh College” where in the   Life students   participated in cleaning of medicinal garden. 


A Lecture was delivered by Dr. Sai Lakshmi Daayana, Gynecologist from Apollo Hospital on personal hygiene, menstrual problems, treatment and diagnosis on Dec 18,  2019 for the students.  Dr. Ashish chouhan, Diabetologist,  from Apollo Hospital, Jubilee  Hills conducted blood sugar, blood pressure, height , weight and dental checkup was  for the students.


Eye checkup camp was held organized from 26- 31st, October 2019. A team of eye specialists from Kanti Velugu programme conducted the eye screening camp for all the staff and students. The event was to conducted to spread awareness on eye disorders and early detection and detect refractive errors and eye ailments.


International Women's day was celebrated in the college on March 8. 2020.

The WEC department conducted an awareness programme in association with She Team and Oyster on Anti-Ragging on Nov 4, 2019


  1. Sandhya Jyothsna, Asst Prof  in History has been  awarded with Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D) this AY
  2. Around 42  paper s were  published in and International Conferences and 20 papers at National level were published  during this AY year
  3.  About 22 faculty attended 43 international , 70 national 3 state and 5 local seminars and workshops.
  4. The faculty members enriched their knowledge as they published 32 research articles in the leading journals

Faculty exchange, student exchange during the year 2019-2020

The college in their continuous effort to boost their knowledge has participated in faculty-student exchange programmes. The Physics and Chemistry department faculties along with students have participated in the faculty exchange programmes during this academic year.  

Internship, on-the-job training, project work during the year 2019-2020:

  1. Around 60 students participated in the National SC/ST Hub conducted by National Institute of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises ( NIMSME) since 26.02.2020
  2. As part of Skill Development Training Banking Foundation Programme was conducted by Edu Bridge Pvt. Ltd. (NSDC) January 2019- April 2020.  Around 323 participated in the programme.
  3. Employability Skills Training was conducted by Mahindra Pride Class Room Training in association with Nandi Foundation & TASK Feb-20 and 165 students have attended the training.


  • Dr. Afsar Unnisa Begum received  State Best Teacher award from Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Govt. of Telangana on the occasion of Teachers day on 05.09.2019
  • Dr. Jyoshna Prabha, Assistant professor  in Telugu received Arigapudi Purnachandra Rao, Ugadi Puraskaram on 06.04.2019 from Arigapudi Purnachandra Rao Foundation.
  • Dr. Madhuri Asst Prof  in Micro- Biology  received best coordinator award for Jignasa study projects in Life Sciences  conducted by the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Govt. of Telangana 17.02.2020
  • Dr. I. Sandhya Jyothsna, Asst Prof  in History  received best coordinator award for Jignasa study projects in Social Sciences  conducted by the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Govt. of Telangana 17.02.2020

Students achievements and awards during the year 2019-2020

Syeda Amreen Fatima of  B A Journalism, Ist year  & Group secured first place winning a cash award of Rs 30, 000/- at the Jignaas study project competition  in Political Science subject Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Govt. of Telangana on 17.02.2020.

  1.  Humera Tabassum  participated at the International Youth Day        conducted by Nizam College (A), Hyderabad 08.08.2019.
  2. Rupa Singh was selected for Jignasa cluster competition at Tara Govt. Degree College (A), Sangareddy 03.09.2019.
  3. Hurren Fatima participated in Hindi Diwas  at GDC Khairatabad on 14.09.2019
  4. Rinky Singh participated on the occasion of       Hindi Diwas at Hindi Academy, Hyderabad on 15.10.2019
  5. Juveria Begum won a cash award of Rs 10, 000/- at the JCI STAR Speaker State level competition conducted by JCI Hyderabad Samskruthi on 06.08.2019. 

Student as Teacher - TSAT NIPUNA

  1. Ms. Anjali  and Ms. Basavaraju Sriharini were selected by the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Govt. of Telangana  to present  lessons on 17.02.2020


At the End of each semester parent teacher meetings are conducted in the college. This time due to Covid the PTM was conducted virtually in April.


The alumni association conducted 2 alumni meet this academic year and mobilized Rs 5000 from the alumnae.


I proudly announce that Students participated in YUVATHARANGAM 2019 state-level cultural and literary competition and won first place in the following categories:  

  • MIME - Team
  • SKIT – GROUP Team

Thus I end my annual report on a positive note and look forward to working with the same zeal and enthusiasm for a new academic year ahead with new aspirations and achievements.
