History

ORIGIN OF THE COLLEGE:The Higher Education in the then Hyderabad state, now Telangana state, was given impetus by Sri. Burugula Ramakishan Rao, a great statesman and visionary. He envisaged that higher education would make the region contribute to the development of independent India. His inspiration led to the sanctioning and establishment of a degree college in the headquarters of each district.

Government Degree College, Siddipet, is highly indebted to its founders late Sri P.V.Rajeshwar Rao, a great leader, advocate and late Sri A. Guruva Reddy, the then M.L.A. of Siddipet. It is a singular occurrence where the degree college was not located at the district headquarters. The great vision, philanthropy and relentless efforts made by them resulted in the establishment of the degree college in Siddipet town. It began as a private college with Pre University Course on 8th July 1956. The number of students enrolled in the 1st batch was 36. Then the institution was named as "College of Arts and Science".

Initially, the college was sponsored by "New Education Society" and engaged its activities in the rented premises of local Sri Sarabheshwaralayam which is exactly opposite to the civil supply warehouse on the road towards Karimnagar. The New Education Society was formed under the chairmanship of late Dr.G.S.Melkote, the then M.P with late Sri Ghansiram Bajaj who was a philanthropist and a treasurer. Prof. Sri C.Sudarshan of New Science College, Hyderabad and Prof. Sri N.V.Subba Rao, faculty member of the Department of Chemistry, O.U, Hyderabad were members. In this selfless endeavour, role, participation, efforts and support extended by them stands remarkable and worth remembering.

The first Principal of the college was Dr.S.Barlinge. Science and Arts groups with English as the medium of instruction were introduced in the academic year 1957-58. As the college gradually grown, it was moved to the another building of Warehousing Society on Karimnagar road. A few sheds were constructed for class rooms and science labs. On 21st Dec 1960, the Government of A.P had taken over the college and since then it has been gradually and steadily registering its growth in the academic field. After 1960,the college was shifted over to the spacious campus of an oil mill on Karimnagar road.

His excellency, Sri Bheemsen Sachar, the then Governor of A.P state and Kavi Samrat, Sri Vishwanatha Sathyanarayana, the first Telugu Gnanapeetha recipient, who was the then Principal of SRR Government Degree College, Karimnagar have visited the college.

DECENNIAL CELEBRATIONS: The B.Com course was introduced in the academic year 1966-67 to fulfill the needs and demands of the students of this region. By 1966, the college was offering all the traditional courses in the faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce. The college celebrated its decennial celebrations in the year 1966. Sri Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy, the then Minister of the state had inaugurated the celebrations as chief guest.

The foundation stone was laid for the present building in 1964 by Sri Burgula Ramakrishna Rao who graced the occasion. The dream of the visionary was taking a definite shape. In August 1968, the institution moved into the present spacious premises constructed by spending fifteen lakh rupees. Now the college has an area of 18 acres, 29 guntas. It has further grown phenomenally into a multi-faced and multi-dimensional institution. The college campus is eco-friendly with serene environment and creates conducive academic environment.
