DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

About the department:

Government Degree College was established in 1956 as a Government College of Arts and Sciences. The department of English was also established in 1956 as English has always been a compulsory subject in all the Undergraduate programmes.

           The department offers B.A. B.Com B.Sc. Life Sciences and B.Sc. Physical Sciences, courses with English as medium of instruction to its UG students. B.A. course is offered is offered through Telugu medium. All the courses are run under CBCS. The details of these courses and permitted intake will be presented in the following table.

COURSE OUTCOMES

Course Objectives

The 20-credit, six-semester course seeks to enhance the English language skills of undergraduate students by

  • Strengthening their grammar and vocabulary
  • Improving their reading and writing skills
  • Enhancing their listening and speaking skills
  • Imparting to them important life skills and human values
  • Encouraging them to think creatively and critically
  • Exposing them to a variety of content-rich texts
  • Expanding their emotional intelligence
  • Developing gender sensitivity among them.   

Course Outcomes

On successful completion of the 20-credit, six-semester course, an undergraduate

student will be able to

• Read, understand, and interpret a variety of written texts

• Undertake guided and extended writing using appropriate vocabulary and

Grammatical correctness.

• Listen with comprehension and speak with confidence in both formal and

    informal contexts with reasonable fluency and acceptable pronunciation

• Become employable with requisite professional skills, ethics and values.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

     1) “Mental Health Week” 10-10-2021 to 16-10-2021

          Online sessions conducted for students, housewives, employees, health workers etc.  addressing mental health issues during and after the two cycles of COVID-19 pandemic. Relieving of social stigma associated with mental health problems, personal and professional challenges due to the pandemic were major issues.

2) Sri. M. Srinivas acted as Resource Person for GAT ISAME ENRICH – Leadership Programme organized by  Lion’s Club International, Beirut, Lebanon, Target audience spread over Lebanon, Israel and Middle-East Countries. 18-11-2021.

3) Sri. M. Srinivas acted as Counselor for the online programme organized by Indian Psychology Association and Madras University on “ COVID-19: Impact on Academic Performance and Mental Health. 6-1-2022 to 8-1-2022.

      4) “Career Guidance and Counseling”

        Sri. M. Srinivas acted as Chief Resource Person for the programme organized by   

       NYK, Siddipet Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India)

5) One-day Training Programme for Police Recruitment Aspirants. 17-02-2021

6) GAT ISAME ENRICH , Leadership seminar conducted to Lions of Middle East Countries like Beirut, Amman, Jerusalem etc. M Srinivas , Lecturer in English presented Leadership Lecture to lions.  Organised by Lions Clubs International.
