Best Practice-1

Digital Transformation

Objectives -

  • To make students use digital technologies in their day to day life.
  • To make students adopt the increasing digital technologies.
  • To motivate students to use of their smartphones for retrieving required information in their day to day life.
  • To encourage students to use their smartphones for their development rather than for entertainment.

Context -

  • Digitization, Digitalization and Digital transformation have been changing the world rapidly.
  • The COVID situation has pushed everyone into digital transformation.
  • Students have first time used their smartphones for online classes and learnt how to use them for their academic activities.
  • Both Government and Private sectors have increased their services online.
  • If you are not aware of these developments it is equal to illiteracy.
  • Hence it is equally important to literate our students in this digital world.
  • Students are yet to depend on computer service centres like Mee Seva for simple online transactions.
  • They are not able to pay their examination fee online through their mobile phones, particularly in rural areas.
  • They are able to use their smartphones for social media.
  • They are afraid of using their smartphones for any other purpose.
  • So, there is a space for taking the students into the real digital world.

How long has been in the process -

  • We have started this from the COVID situation.
  • Besides taking online classes through ZOOM, we found that there should be a mechanism to deliver study material to motivate the students.
  • Whatsapp groups were not very effective as searching for the required information has become very difficult for the students.
  • So, we came up with an innovative idea of creating departmental websites where all the required information can be made available and students can access them whenever he/she needs it.

Evidence of success -

Department of English has created the following websites for delivering learning resources.

  • English 1st Semester New (2021-22 onwards)
  • English 2nd Semester New (2021-22 onwards)
  • English 3rd Semester
  • English 4th Semester
  • English 5th Semester
  • English 6th Semester

The other Departments websites.

  • Physics Department Website
  • Chemistry Department Website
  • Commerce Department Website

The college has also created a website for accessing old question papers of Palamuru University.

  • PU Old Question Papers

Motivated by the success of these websites the other departments are preparing their websites and they are under construction.

Out Comes:

  • The students are using these websites for accessing required learning resources.
  • They are also surfing the net for extra information.
  • They are able to do the given assignments with the help of Google.
  • The number of students paying the fee online through their mobile phones has increased.
  • They are able to browse the internet for day-to-day news and updates.

Resources required:

  • Creating a website requires a lot of patience.
  • Lecturers have to digitize their study material systematically and upload them into their websites.
  • Lecturers have to work out of college hours as it requires a lot of time.
  • Every lecturer should have his/her own system with an internet facility.
  • Students also should have a smartphone with an internet facility.

Problems encountered

  • Not many students have smartphones.
  • Even the lecturers have not acquired laptops or desktops.
  • But slowly these problems will be solved.

Best Practice-2

Awareness of Plastic Pollution

Awareness of Plastic Pollution should be a continuous process and needs to inculcate as part of education to the students.  Hence, The College has been trying to educate our students and motivating them to educate their neighbourhood in turn.

Objectives -

  • To make students/people/society aware of plastic pollution.
  • To make the college, town and villages plastic free.
  • To motivate students to come up with innovative ideas, and strategies to combat plastic pollution.
  • To encourage students and in turn people of their villages to reduce single use of plastic.
  • To encourage people to refuse single-use plastics and encourage to use alternate materials in place of plastic

Context -

  • Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues.
  • Half of all plastics ever manufactured have been made in the last 15 years.
  • Annual production of plastics worldwide has increased from 1.5 million metric tonnes in 1950 to 367 million metric tonnes in 2020.
  • Plastic garbage is polluting soil, rivers, seas and oceans.
  • The chemicals used in plastics are absorbed by humans and animals causing several diseases including cancer.
  • It is inevitable to control plastic pollution if we want sustainable development.

How long has been in the process -

  • We have been making students aware of the issue through NSS regular activities.
  • Students have been propagating it to the people during the NSS Camps.
  • We have planned to establish ‘Green Cops’ which would take this movement to their neighbourhood.

Evidence of success -

  • Students have been very active and have come up with innovative ideas like alternatives to plastic and recycling of plastic garbage.

Out Comes:

  • The students are now aware of the problems of plastic usage.
  • They realised that it is necessary to ban plastic to achieve sustainable development.
  • They are talking about it with their people in the villages and trying to make them aware of the hazards of plastic usage.
  • The students are proactive in making the college campus plastic free.
  • Students have requested for an earthen pot in place of the plastic water bottles in the college.

Resources required:

  • To take this to society, we don’t require much money.
  • We require well-motivated students.
  • We need placards made of recyclable material.
  • We need alternate material to substitute plastic for demonstration.
  • Some innovative ideas are to use plastic garbage to recycle and make their pieces of art.  Students have come up with many such ideas and have used them to demonstrate in the college as well as in their villages.

Problems encountered

  • People have habituated to the use of plastic.  They find it handy to use them.
  • People don’t understand and refuse to believe that plastic is dangerous.
  • But these problems can be handled by a meaningful discussion with the people.
