Government Degree College, Mancherial is situated on the banks of the river Godavari - free from pollution and the atmosphere is very conducive to pursue higher studies. Mancherial, formally known as Garimella is one of the major towns of Mancherial district, Telangana State, It has been in limelight in view of its geographical position. It has the accessibility to different parts of the country by rail route. It is a mini industrial town surrounded by coal mines (Singareni collieries) , Cement factories, clay pipe factories and Thermal Power Project, Jaipur and NTPC, Ramagundam are nearby.
Mancherial district is newly created in 2016 after the formation of Telangana state. Prior to its formation it was a part of Adilabad district in Telangana State which is well known for its forests, tribal population, temples and industries. It has excelled in the fields of politics, art and literature.
As there were no openings to pursue higher education in this remote area and to channelize the energy and intellect of the youth. Philanthropists have taken a bold step in 1967 to start a college. Since then, the institution has been relentlessly toiling hard by following the great saying of Swami Vivekananda on Education, "We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded and by which one can stand on one's own feet". The present building was built in 1976 so far 29 Principals worked here and at present Dr. V. Chakrapani, (M.Sc Botany) is rendering his services.
Majority of the students are from socially and economically weaker sections of the society. Therefore, very few students opt for self financing courses. In the beginning of the academic year, the students with rural background find it difficult to cope up with the courses they choose, but they get into the groove owing to the relentless efforts put in by the staff. Natural talents of rural students like cultural activities and sports are tapped more effectively.
Twenty lecturers impart their knowledge and experience in order to promote overall development of the students. There are three faculty members with Ph.D degree and about 85% of the regular faculties are NET/SET qualified. There are about 400 students pursuing studies in under graduate courses and 50 in post graduate courses. The teaching community does believe in building character first, as quoted by Ruskin on education. Ruskin Bond said, "All educationh must be moral primarily, intellectual secondary". our motto - as quoted by our ex-presindent A.P.J Abdual Kalam is " Te purpose of education is to make good human beings with skill and expertise…Enlightened human beings can be created by teachers."
The institution is affiliated to Kakatiya University, Warangal, Telangana State. The institution offers 9 UG courses under B.A., B.Com., & B.Sc programmes and one PG courses namely M.Com. The institute has a centre of Distance Education i.e., Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad to meet the academic needs of the local students who are unable to attend regular classes. Telangana Skills and Knowledge Centre (TSKC) of the college prepares the students for various competitive exams and facilitates in acquiring jobs in the emerging global markets. Various ICT methods are being implemented for effective teaching. The college went for NAAC in 2016 and got B Grade with CGP of 2.47
With the constant efforts of all the stake holders and students, the institution is changing and updating itself to the challenges in the field of higher education.
