   ORIGIN AND HISTORY

 

           Nalgonda is located in the southern part of Telangana flourishing with a few forest tracts through which the river Krishna flows. The Nagarjuna Sagar Project was built for irrigating lakhs of acres of land and generating hydroelectricity across the  Krishna River.

          The District of the Nalgonda, which was part of the Hyderabad state, was under the rule of Asif Jahi dynasty when it was merged into the Indian union in 1948.

           After the Reorganization of the state, 1st November 1956 it became the part of the Andhra Pradesh.  The District was formerly known as Neelagiri (Blue Hill) it is situated in southern part of Telengana Region.  The District is rural based over 80% of the population living in villages.  It has a rich cultural heritage as the oldest center of learning dating back to the Paleolithic age.

           It is known for its rich historical and diverse cultural heritage reflecting through Buddhist centers of learning ,at Nagarjuna Sagar. Rachakonda, Panagal and Pillala márri with beautiful sculptural monuments. Kolanupaka is a well-known pilgrim center for Jains who throng there in great numbers once a year to celebrate their annual feast. It is the land where the great saint Acharya  Vinobha Bave launched  his "Bhoodan Movement".

            Nalgonda is a city of hill locked between two hills Kapurala Gutta and Latif Shahi Gutta. So prominent are the hills in the city’s landscape that its very name derives from their references. The name Nalgonda is combination of two words “Nalla”-Means black and “Konda” –Means Hill.

            This college was started, during the academic year 1977-78 with the efforts and good wishes of elders and the elite of the town visualizing the great need of it for promoting women’s education in this backward region, in a rented building .The first Principal was Smt.Hymavathi. At the time of inception of  the college had only two faculties i.e. Commerce and Arts .The strength of the students applied and got admitted in both faculties in the first year of its inception was only nine. With the passage of time the college has registered unprecedented growth over the years. At present the strength of the college is 2475 on roll.    

              The Institution growth over the last four decades signifies its inherent strength. It is strength that paved the way for women in remote areas to rise-up their ability which in turn gave them sense of direction to the right path. The strength that has helped for their empowerment and ultimately the strength that has shaped the career of women.

             In the year 1984 government allotted an old building which was the official residence of deputy executive engineer vide its G.O. Ms No.74. From 1988-89 Academic year Science courses were started with combinations of BZC and MPC groups. It is the only government degree college for women in   entire Nalgonda district and has been catering to the educational needs of women for the past 37 years.

            This college is one of the few Government institutions that are greatly admired for its location being in the heart of the town and proximity to Bus stand and Railway station with highly congenial surroundings. The atmosphere promotes academic pursuits. College faculty is highly experienced and qualified.

            The Institution was accorded recognition under 2(f) and 12(B) in 1993 of the UGC act of 1956 and since then it has been receiving assistance from the UGC.

            The college was accredited NAAC with B+ Grade in 2006 and with B Grade in 2015.

            The institution was provisionally affiliated to the Osmania University from 1977-78 to 2010-11 and from 2011-12 on wards the College is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Nalgonda. 

            Degree Online Services Telangana (DOST) was introduced by Telangana Government in the year 2015 as an e- governance initiative. The practice is that in order to get an admission for bachelor's degree in colleges in Telangana, the students are required to register on the DOST portal. Being the best college of Nalgonda district Govt. Degree College for Women, Nalgonda benefited a lot from DOST. The intake of the college is increased year by year, keeping in view of the large demand for the seats of the Govt. Degree College for Women, Nalgonda. The intake of the 1st year students’ is increased from 390 to 1080 during the period from 2015-16 to 2020-21 which is a testimony of the reputation of the college.

           As part of emerging trends in higher education, the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) has been introduced in the curriculum; this institution has also been offering all the courses in accordance with the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from the academic year 2016-17.

               The college has grown into a vibrant organization for providing an all-round education of women students especially which includes the underprivileged sections of the society. It has won the appreciation as one of the premier institutions in the district for its extension of service with humble endeavor to live up to the aspirations and hopes of thousands of students.
